Business After Hours: Jefferson Soil and Water
Join Us for a Business After Hours with Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District!
This unique BAH will take us to Smithfield to the Straus Family Farm where will receive a tour of their farm and enjoy a food buffet spotlighting home-grown; farm-raised food produce and meats provided by local farmers and prepared by Piergallini Catering.
The Straus Family Farm includes the original home and barn built in the late 1880's by
Joseph M. Cope, raising Marino sheep on the farmland. Fred and Helen Straus acquired the
property in 1964, moving in with their three daughters, Jayme, Jodee and Jane.
Presently, Julius and Jodee (Straus) Verhovec manage the property, raising Charolais cattle
while carrying out Conservation Practices thanks to the education and technical assistance
provided by Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District staff and the Natural Resources
Conservation Service. These practices have also been implemented on acreage owned by Julius
and Jodee which adjoins the family farm.
